Nuts and snack packaging is one of the most demanding segments in flexible packaging for fat oxidation and aroma retention. Almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, cashews and pistachios are high-fat (50-70%) products; these fats become rancid in the presence of light, oxygen and temperature. Chips, crackers and extruded snacks are sensitive to moisture ingress — loss of crispness directly affects purchase decisions. MyPlast nuts and snack packaging is produced MAP (Modified Atmosphere Packaging) compatible, with high barrier and nitrogen-flushing integration.

A secondary challenge in snack packaging is filling speed. Chips and extruded snacks are packaged on high-speed VFFS lines producing 200-400 packs per minute; film strength, seal speed and print quality must keep pace. MyPlast optimises film properties for high-speed VFFS compatibility.

Barrier Requirements

Oxygen barrier (OTR): For high-fat nuts, OTR ≤2 cc/m²/day is mandatory; otherwise rancidity sets in within 3-6 months. PET/MET-PET/PE or BOPP/MET-BOPP structure is standard; aluminium foil is preferred for premium and long shelf-life products. In MAP packaging, nitrogen flushing keeps O₂ concentration below 2%.

Moisture barrier (MVTR): Chips and extruded snacks target MVTR ≤2 g/m²/day. Loss of crispness begins above 4% moisture content. Metallized laminate and EVOH barrier are used.

Light protection: In transparent or partially transparent packaging, UV oxidation accelerates fat rancidity. For premium nut brands, full light protection (aluminium foil or full metallization) is recommended.

Additionally, nitrogen flushing fills 95% of internal volume — providing both oxygen control and pack appearance / chip-protection from crushing.
