About This Packaging

Pasta packaging holds a unique position in flexible packaging: it must deliver both product visibility and structural protection. Consumers evaluate pasta quality at the shelf — shape, colour, uniformity. At the same time, pasta must be carefully protected from moisture ingress, breakage and pest entry. MyPlast pasta packaging combines retail-grade presentation with high barrier performance.

Spaghetti, penne, fusilli, macaroni, lasagna and specialty cuts (orecchiette, farfalle, gnocchi) present different geometric properties and different packaging challenges. Long pasta (spaghetti, linguine) is packaged in horizontal flowpack or tube formats, while short pasta is packaged in pillow bags, doypacks or inner sachets. Across all formats, blocking moisture migration preserves pasta's breakage resistance during storage and its cooking performance.

Barrier Requirements

Moisture barrier (MVTR): Pasta is stable at 12-13% moisture content; above this level, mould growth and flavour loss begin. For standard retail pasta packs (500 g, 1 kg), MyPlast achieves MVTR ≤2 g/m²/day with OPP/PE or PET/PE laminates — sufficient for 18-month shelf life. For tropical-climate export packaging, three-layer PET/MET-PET/PE structures are recommended.

Mechanical resistance: Pasta packaging requires high puncture resistance and seal strength to prevent product breakage. The inner PE layer is selected at 60-100 microns. Side-gusset and flat-bottom constructions prevent long pasta pieces from shifting laterally during transit, reducing breakage.

Material Options

  • 1Clear OPP/PE or PET/PE — the preferred structure for pasta visibility. 78% of consumers visually evaluate pasta shape and colour at the shelf, which is why most brands choose transparent packaging. Standard for 500 g and 1 kg retail formats.
  • 2Kraft window structure — kraft outer layer with a clear window is frequently used for premium and artisanal pasta brands. Ideal for natural, homemade and organic positioning.
  • 3Metallized barrier (PET/MET-PET/PE) — used for long export chains or high-humidity conditions. Full light protection extends shelf life for fat-containing specialty pastas (egg pasta, vegetable-infused pasta).
  • 4Mono-PE recyclable structure — compliant with new European packaging waste regulations (PPWR). Recommended for sustainability-led brands.

Packaging Format Options

Pillow bag (short pasta): The most common format for short cuts — penne, fusilli, macaroni and farfalle. Produced on VFFS lines in 250 g – 1 kg sizes. Typical sealing temperature 140-160°C with 8-12 mm seal width.

Flowpack (long pasta): Horizontal flowpack or tube format for spaghetti, linguine, fettuccine. Standard 500 g format uses 200-220 mm film width. Compatible with automatic HFFS lines.

Doypack (premium positioning): Stand-up zipper pouches for specialty pasta lines (egg pasta, gluten-free, organic). Produced in 250 g, 400 g, 500 g formats. Reclosability improves consumer retention and supports premium price points.

Side-gusset bag: For 2-5 kg wholesale and restaurant packaging. Bottom stability ensures upright shelf placement.
